The time I popped some popcorn in my church’s microwave was a big mistake… the smoke from opening the bag of popcorn cause the fire alarm to go off and next thing I knew, two hundred youth and young adults had to huddle outside in the cold for the next twenty minutes waiting for the fire trucks to come. The time I thought I could pull off bangs was a big mistake… and one that I had to keep paying for the next six months as I waited for it to grow out. Now, the time I cried myself to sleep each night for three months straight because of a friendship gone wrong… that was a massive mistake that to this day still creates a pang of pain in my heart when I start thinking too hard about it.
Call me a nutcase, but looking back, each and every passing year, the number of mistakes that I have to add onto my list of muck ups and screw ups only ever gets bigger and bigger. I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty sentimental. With every passing season of my life, I can’t help but reflect on all the seasons that have come before.
But before we move on to find out what the Bible says about making mistakes, perhaps you will relate to me…

Here’s an Embarrassing Story or Two…
The Truth About the Mistakes We Make…
I’ve always loved thinking about the future because the future was always like a clean slate for myself. Anything is possible and like Anne Shirley says, “tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it”… (for those of you who get my Anne of Green Gables reference!) But every single time I reflect about my past, I often can’t help but reflect about the mistakes I’ve made and the things I wished happened differently.
Perhaps you are like me and you can’t help but wince when you remember about the time you comic-strip-styled slipped over while walking on flat ground in front of all your friends. Or perhaps you can’t help but cringe when you remember about the time you said the lamest thing in front of the most awesome person you’ve ever met. Or maybe you can’t help but want to dive behind a pillow when you recalled the time you behaved in a way that was less than glorifying to God.
Looking back now, you can’t help but want to pull the big doe-eyed girl of your past by the pigtails and give her a big shake because you can’t help but remember all the lies you once believed. All those lies about who you were and what you thought was truly important come flooding back to you. And you can’t help but want to tell that big doe-eyed girl of your past with the pigtails that she didn’t actually know it all… she was actually just as naïve as other people said she was.
The thing that you did years or even just months ago? It once was your source of pride, but now it is a mistake that is too dirty for you to even think about. You push it to the back of your mind and try your hardest to pretend that it never happened. You would never speak of it unless forced, but the feelings of guilt, shame and insecurity begin bubbling inside your very soul… and the lies begin seeping in… no one would love if they only knew what you’ve done…
Do You Remember Making These Mistakes?
Do you remember the hours that you spent trying to find the perfect picture to post on social media? Anxiously waiting for validation from the rest of the world that you are worthy of being loved… and that you were indeed beautiful?
Does it feel like yesterday when you scrolled through your old Facebook posts and see faces of your past that you no longer talk to? Faces that betrayed you, faces that abandoned you, faces that hurt you. And faces that used to make you cry over why you weren’t enough for them.
Do you remember what it was like when jealousy hit you like a ton of bricks… and out of envy and insecurity you would say words (or even just simply think thoughts) of other people that would be just downright unkind?
Does it feel like yesterday when you gave your heart away to the wrong people? And found yourself feeling crushed and more lonely than ever before, just wondering why they couldn’t love you right?
So what exactly does the Bible say about making mistakes?

What Does God (and the Bible) Say About Making Mistakes?
#1 What God Says About Making Mistakes is that the Journey Always Ends in Christ’s Glory
Well, what the Bible shows us is that making mistakes is inevitable. We are sinners living in a broken world. But no matter how many bumps we have along the road, the journey always ends in Christ’s glory. Even though we give ourselves some pretty gnarly bruises and scratches along the way, we have our biggest cheerleader waiting for us at the end of every journey… our Heavenly Father waiting for us with open arms.
The fact of the matter is we suck as people. We let our perfect Creator down… and guess what? We do deserve the punishment of death for sinful mistakes. But because our just God is so equally merciful, even though your sin and your mistakes are a part of the story, they are no longer the main focus… and they certainly aren’t the ending. The ending of this story is the undeserving sinner being able to receive the gift of redemption by grace through faith.
So this journey that you’re on is not simply a tale of your mistakes. Rather, the main point of your story is about being redeemed in the perfect Son who bore your guilt and your shame upon that cross so that the price of your sins could be paid in full. So sure, you’ve made a lot of mistakes. Some that cause you to hang your head in shame. But your story of insecurity and regret is a story of redemption. He is waiting for you to come back home to Him after your screw ups and mess ups and humbly repent and seek His grace… He is waiting for you with open arms.

#2 What God Says About Making Mistakes is that It’s Never Too Late to Turn Back
So what does God say about making mistakes? Well, it is never too late to be invited back to His house and feast with Him at His table. It doesn’t matter if you have committed a sin so inexcusable that you feel the need to hide your face. And it doesn’t matter if you are fifteen or fifty. Come as you are. His grace is bigger than your sins. His perfection is greater than your imperfections. And His love is larger than the circumstances we once found ourselves in.
You are the main guest of the most wonderful feast in the world. Don’t let your mistakes define you… and don’t let your stories of regret give rise to the lies that there is no hope and only shame. The hope that we have is in Christ Jesus who died on that cross for your sins so that your sins could be washed away and that you could be made anew.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.— John 3:16
So yes, we make mistakes. Both you and I. And we don’t deserve His grace. But the awesome thing is that we serve a God who is both just and loving. And the thing is, He really wants you to be able to dine with Him at His table. So the only thing that is left to do right now? Repent wholeheartedly and turn to Him and so that you might be redeemed through His perfect sacrifice.
Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord — Acts 3:19
