The issue of identity has become increasingly popular to talk about today. From the moment we are born, we are constantly told who we are, or who we should be. With so many opinions flying left and right towards us (many of which are contrary to one another), so many of us begin wondering what our identity really is. So finding your identity in Christ has become all about pushing aside all the lies you and the world feeds yourself and focusing solely on unshakeable Biblical truth.
From the moment you popped out of your mama, you were given an identity. You were a ‘precious little girl’, you were the ‘cutest baby in the world’ and you were the ‘cleverest kid your age’. But over time, you began realizing that you weren’t actually the cutest nor the cleverest. And you no longer felt like you were as precious as they claimed you were.
As a consequence, you begin feeling constantly compared to others, feeling not enough and began wondering if you have any value at all. Inside, you are feeling totally broken, rejected and completely lost. This is because, the thing is, you have misplaced your identity.
Instead of placing the value that He has given you on your identity in God, you began placing your worth and identity on whether your crush likes you back, how many people press ‘like’ on your Facebook profile picture, whether or not people tell you that you’re pretty and whether or not you are doing well at work/school. Essentially, you have been playing a game of hide and seek; trying to find your identity and value everywhere but the one place that would actually win you the game. Our Creator Himself.
The Plague of the Modern Identity Crisis
9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. — 1 Peter 2:9-10
The identity crisis is a very real thing — especially in this age of individualism. So if we don’t remember to armor ourselves with truth and life and instead, place our identity in the fickle nature of the world, we will constantly have the foundation beneath us crack… causing us to stumble and fall.
So how do we begin finding our identity in God?

How to Find Your Identity in Christ | For the Girl Looking for Her Identity in God
How Can We Define Identity?
Your identity is who define yourself to be. It is how you experience yourself to be. Your identity speaks to the traits that you believe truly define who you are as a person. We often define our identity with traits, achievements and personal characteristics. And sometimes, our sense of identity is defined by what others around us say about us.
But…
I am kind until I am not.
We are patient until we are not.
She is humble until she is not.
They are understanding until they are not.
If we really think about it, there is no other way to describe us except ‘we are imperfect but beloved children of God’ because no other description would ever fit us so perfectly in every situation.
So what is our identity in Christ? And why do we need that new identity in Christ alone?
Why is Finding Our Identity So Hard?
As human beings, we make mistakes like A.L.L the time! And sometimes, the mistakes that we make just make us want to go to the mirror and shake the person staring back at us super hard! Seriously, I can’t even count how many times I literally RAN out of a room because I was embarrassed. Because lets face it, if my little soul could float out of my body and give myself a little kick in the behind, I probably would have! Lift your hand up if you can relate!
Part of the brokenness that we experience comes from the nature of the world we live in. So often we allow ourselves to be defined by other broken and damaged people. We let our sense of identity be defined by the fallen world around us and we try to find security in who we are amongst worldly sources that always fall apart.
It is impossible to achieve a secure sense of self when we place our identity in things that change rapidly. We are left feeling hurt and confused when we let our worldly expectations become the basis of our identity because our foundation will inevitably crumble away from beneath us.
So it is only when we begin to truly understand our Creator and allow Him to define who we are that everything changes. Instead of allowing the world to define us… and chasing for our identity from sources that pull the rug from under our feet, we can experience true security on who we are.
The Meaning of Our Identity in God
If you say that ‘my identity is in Christ alone’, when you think about who you are, the very first thing that should come to your mind is that you are somebody who is deeply and truly loved by the Lord. When we find our identity in God, we can rest in full comfort knowing that we were created in His image (Genesis 1:27), His heirs (Romans 8:17), his chosen people (1 Peter 2:9), fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14), and loved beyond measure (Ephesians 3:16-21).
How awesome is it know what our identity in Christ is!

Jesus is the Role Model for those with an Identity Crisis | Why My Identity is in Jesus
The super awesome thing that I can’t help but stress every single time is that Jesus went through exactly what we go through each day!
He out of all people REALLY knew what it was like to be condemned by people and have people try to speak over Him and try and tell Him who He was. He knew what it was like to be praised one day and crucified and mocked at the next… but He remained steadfast because His identity was not in this – it was in His Father. And we too can remain steadfast when we know and believe that our identity is found in the Father.
And it has always comforted me to know that Jesus was perfect in every way and was blameless in all ways, and yet, there were still people who scorned him. This comforts me because I know that there is no level of achievement I could ever reach that would give me the approval of every man.
We were never created to be worshipped. We were created to worship our maker. When we lay on the foundation that our Father has set for us — we can rest in full comfort knowing that our identity is in Christ. It doesn’t rest in the world or even in ourselves.
What is Keeping Me From My Identity in Christ?
From the moment the pitter-patter of our lil’ feet touched the ground, we were exposed to a world where we are constantly reminded that we are not enough. We are reminded that we are not enough EVERY s.i.n.g.l.e. t.i.m.e we stand in the checkout line and see another girl looking absolutely flawless while we look at our sweatpants and messy bun and shuffle our feet in embarrassment. We are reminded that we are not enough everysingle time we don’t get invited to an event everyone is going to. And we are reminded that we are not enough when someone tells us that we fall short of the mark.
Did ya relate to a single thing that I said? If you did — girl, I feel you! And do you feel that suuuuuuper warm presence right beside you? Because that is me, giving you a virtual hug right now!
But tell me, has your heart been hurt before because you felt like you weren’t good enough? Has tears fallen down because you constantly felt like you couldn’t measure up to the expectations of the world? I get it.I really do — because I have been there! BUT here is the thing, you were never created to be perfect. And you were never created to have your identity placed in anything but God. Our identity is in Christ and nothing else.
It’s Not Always Easy to Find Your Identity
I admit it, there is often a gap that exists between intellectually acknowledging these truths about who God says we are and actually being able to live out His truths. And more often than not, when we are unable to rest in full comfort in the identity that God has given us, it is because of how we see ourselves and the ways we still allow the world around us to define who we are.

5 Biblical Truths on How to Find My Identity in Christ
Truth 1 for Finding Your Identity in Christ: Our Identity in God is Greater than Our Identity in the World
When we begin finding our identity in Christ, we are essentially rejecting our identity in the world.
It is impossible to hold onto two identities that contrast so vastly from one another. So, the first step to accept your new identity in Christ is to let go of your identity that is anchored to the world.
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.— Romans 12:2
When we find our identity in God, we are accepting a new identity in Christ… and not one that is given to us by the world. But if we aren’t careful, we can so easily become used to the standards of the world and using the characteristics of the world to define ourselves.
So begin fixing your eyes on the One who calls you by name and allow the Holy Spirit to transform you from the inside out. Stop holding onto the past and instead, give God full reign to mold you more and more in His image every single day.
Truth 2 for Finding Your Identity in Christ: Identifying the Lies Separating You From Your Identity in God
It doesn’t matter where you are on your faith journey and it really doesn’t matter how old you are, every girl in the world lives a life infiltrated with lies.
The moment Eve allowed the serpent to feed her lies and saw what the serpent said as the truth, that was when her identity came crashing down! God was no longer at the center, their sinful nature had broken that pure connection that they shared with God. So as a result, they were both exposed and felt guilt and fear for the first time in their lives. They were instantly ashamed and scared – and not just a little bit. They were ABSOLUTELY s.h.a.k.e.n and t.e.r.r.i.f.i.e.d to their very core!
Now ask yourself, what lies is the serpent feeding you?
Does it make you believe that you are only worthy if you are achieving something great? Or maybe your identity is based on being perfect? Or perhaps it is telling you that nobody cares about your needs. Regardless of what lies are being told, immediately throw it to the side and replace it with the truth! Finding your identity in Christ always starts with feeding yourself with the truth.
For example…
Lie: I have to be perfect in order to be loved.
Truth: I am made perfect through Christ’s strength. (2 Corinthians 12:9)
Lie: My success determines my worth.
Truth: I am worth more than a thousand rubies. (Proverbs 31:10)
Lie: I have to know everything in order to be safe.
Truth: I have to trust in the Lord with all my heart, lean not my own understanding, in all my ways acknowledge Him and He will make my path straight. (Proverbs 3:5-6)
If you are having difficulty identifying the lies keeping you from saying ‘my identity is in Jesus’, one helpful trick is to ask yourself if something sounds like what Jesus would say. For example, would Jesus say “You have to be perfect in order to be loved by me?” Or would He say something like, “I will love you no matter what?”

Truth 3 for Finding Your Identity in Christ: Don’t Just Pour, but DRENCH Yourself with the Truth About Your True Identity in Christ
The second step on how to find our true identity in Christ is to D.R.E.N.C.H yourself with His truth. When you spend so much time battling the lies, you will crumble down feeling absolutely tired! No battle should ever be done on your own. Nor do you have to! For God even says,
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” — Isaiah 41:10
Let God be your rock and your salvation, your everlasting sense of self and identity by strengthening your relationship with Him and allow Him to pour truth into every moment of your life! And the best way to do that? Dive deep into the Word and spend time with Him. Because no relationship with someone you love can continue to grow without actually spending time communicating with them each and every day.
Seriously! Can you imagine going for a whole year not talking to your significant other or your parents or a super close friend?
However, that isn’t to say other methods of feeding truth such as spending time with other women further along their faith journey who can offer you Godly counsel won’t be solid ways of receiving God’s truth. But, truly I tell you, what better way can there be to know God’s truth and begin finding your true identity in Christ than to go to the source of truth Himself?

Truth 4 for Finding Your Identity in Christ: Humble Yourself to Your Identity in God
If you have known the Lord, it is likely that you already know God’s basic truths. But whether you decide to give His truths the power in your life like it deserves, is a different story.
Being able to admit that we had been misled all our lives isn’t something very easy to do. This is because not only does that mean we have to admit we aren’t always right to others, but we have to admit that we aren’t always right to ourselves. Whoaaaaaa!
If you have found yourself head to head with the truth, but you continue to lead a lifestyle led by a lie, ask yourself this…
What lie am I feeding myself that is making me ignore His truth about my identity in Christ?
This is because you can’t continue a lie with a truth. Only a lie can encourage the continuation of another lie.
When you find that out, K.I.C.K it out and replace it with God’s truth! And pray for a discerning heart and an open mind! Like the Pharisees, if you have prideful heart, even if God was standing physically right there in front of you, you still wouldn’t believe His truth!

Truth 5 for Finding Your Identity in Christ: Bring Everything to the Foot of the Cross
It can absolutely be hurtful when someone speaks harmful words over you! But you don’t have to take it all in. If we continued living in a way where we sought out the approval or praise of others as a measure of our self-worth, then our identity would be shaky and inconsistent. This is because the same people who love you and say affirming things to you one day can be the very same people who say words that tear you apart the next.
So, the next time someone or something causes you to stumble with your self-worth or identity, bring these words to the foot of the cross and rest in full comfort knowing that you don’t live for the approval of others. And if you are your own worst enemy, know that your negative thoughts don’t have to rule you! Finding your true identity in Christ means that you don’t live to be told by others of who you are — because it says so in every page of the Bible who you are!
And these are just examples of what the Bible says our true identity in Christ is…
Let God be the one who takes care of all the comments (both positive and negative) — let Him be the one who helps you carry your burdens and let Him be the one who deals with everything that is spoken over you. So lift your worries and burdens up in prayer. You were never created to be anything other than who He says you are! Instead, you were created to be able to proclaim, “I find my identity in Christ alone”.
Sometimes getting into a prayer routine can be hard. Work gets in the way. School gets in the way. Kids get in the way. LIFE gets in the way. That is exactly why sometimes staying practical and creating new systems to keep you on track can help with a well-disciplined prayer life. This is where the Daily Prayer Journal printable comes in handy. Deepen your relationship with God through regular prayer by making use of the practical accountability of a prayer journal.

So Here is a Short Recap… Stability in Our Identity is in Christ Alone
“I the Lord do not change” — Malachi 3:6
What most of us don’t realize is that we are chasing after this vision and dream for a brighter, more hopeful and safer tomorrow like a professional rock climber trying to reach the top without a harness. It’s dangerous and unpredictable!
But it is time to silence the lies and to stop the hurt that comes with a failed identity because nothing quite devastates like a dream broken, a hope smashed or your own sense of self coming to a crushing end when things aren’t going right.
Instead, we must tie our identities to our completely unflinching and unchanging God. He is the one who loves us more than we can ever know. And the moment when I truly feel that safety and all around serenity that comes with having an identity of being God’s child is in those sweet moments when I lay down all that I have and say, “My identity is in Christ. I am Yours, fully and completely.”
“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God. And that is what we are!” — 1 John 3:1
