Sneak Peek of the Psalm 23 Devotional…
1 The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, 3 he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
Psalm 23
Psalm 23 is a beautiful reminder of God’s love for us. Even in the presence of darkness, we still have a reason to rejoice! We don’t have to only rejoice when evil has left, but we can laugh in the presence of all who is against us because He is still with us!
This Psalm is so well known and so incredibly rich with peace and blessing. Yet often we can become so “familiar” with popular verses and chapters of God’s word that they almost lose the important message that He is wanting to instill within our hearts. So today, let’s work through this Psalm step by step, praying His words back to Him and truly meditating on them verse by verse. This way, we can truly be strengthened by His many amazing truths and promises!
So let’s dive deep into this Psalm 23 devotional together!
Psalm 23 Devotional… Let’s Begin!
The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. The LORD is a shepherd the provides for His flock. We, being one of the shepherd’s sheep are never in want of spiritual food. He fills our soul and nourishes us from within. He provides for us in the midst of hard seasonsin all areas of our life. This doesn’t necessarily mean that we will have a life of luxury, but we can rest assured knowing that God will be with us every step of our life.
He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters. We then see a good God that purposefully leads us to the good things in life. He makes us lie down in green pastures and leads us beside still waters. Our Father never withholds what He knows to be truly good for us and will oftentimes lead us in the direction of what is good. For He knows where true rest and blessing are found, and leads us there, He restores, He refreshes, He brings peace and goodness.
He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Life has a terrible habit of chipping away at our hearts, making it harden and colder. But God restores it, revitalizes it and nurtures our soul by providing us with His grace, promises and truths! And as things that are not of the Lord will often cause us to undergo hurt that doesn’t necessarily bear good fruit, our Shepherd seeks to guide us along the right path for His sake. And why does he lead us? David says that it’s for his name’s sake. After all, if a shepherd leads his flock off a cliff, what does that do for that shepherd’s name – for his reputation?
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Here we are shown a God that brings great relief even when all things are unknown. It shows us a God that has firm control over every situation for His rod and His staff bring comfort. It shows that following this Shepherd doesn’t necessarily mean that there will be no dark valleys to journey through, but that when there are difficult roads ahead, the Lord has His firm hand over it.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. God has a celebration meal with us not just when our enemies are defeated and everything is good and peaceful with us, but when our enemies are still very much present. He celebrates with us not only after we have emerged from the dark valley, but when we are in the middle of it! And while it might seem like the absolute opposite of what one would look to do, He seeks to rejoice and laugh with us when we are surrounded by our troubles.
Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. That word for “follow” means “to chase, to pursue.” We can be assured, He chases us today, and all our days, with His goodness and love. And even at the end of all our days here on this earth, He still has more in store, and it’s greater than we could ever imagine! HOW A.W.E.S.O.M.E IS THAT?
