Not going to lie. The entire book of Romans was something I relished going through during the COVID-19 outbreak. In the season of the lockdown, the words in Romans were a source of great comfort and strength. And honestly, I nearly forgot how awesome this book was — I hadn’t touched Romans in a couple years at least!
However, when it comes to Romans, one of the most popular and yet controversial verses comes in the form of Romans 8:28. In just a single verse, there is so much truth and depth. And while it might shock you that I would dedicate an entire Bible Study to one single verse, you will soon begin to see why!
There are definitely going to be topics within this Bible study that are considered ‘hard’ topics. But above all else, the purpose of this Bible Study isn’t to cause division between us but to try to unite together as we journey together trying to discover God’s truths and the meaning that was already intended in the scriptures!
So let’s dive deep into this in-depth Romans 8:28 devotion together!

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
Romans 8:28
Part One: Does God Always Work for the Good of Us?
Before we begin friend, have a careful think about if you believe that God really works for the good of those who love Him when you hear stories of Christians being persecuted and dying for the sake of His name. After all, how can things like that possibly be good?
One of the most popular verses that often gets spun in the wrong way is Romans 8:28. It is often used to preach a prosperity gospel where Christians begin expecting that they will live out a perfect life with wealth and health. So sometimes those who feed into this version of the gospel are left hurt, sad and confused when disaster strikes them as they wonder why bad things happened if God worked for the good of those who love Him.
But one of the most important facts is that God is so sovereign that all things that do happen to Christians — including trials, tribulations and persecution will work together for the good of those who love God. The hope that we hold onto isn’t that peril and distress that we face aren’t meant to simply go away, but that God will make every painful situation and circumstance into an instrument of His mercy to do us good.
“You meant it for evil,” Joseph had told his brothers who sold him into slavery, “but God meant it for good.” (Genesis 50:20) So when we think about the hardships that happen to those who love Jesus, we can rest assured knowing that in ALL things, God will mean it for good! And that is the hope that we can hold onto.
When we begin living our lives in the midst of this promise and the hope that it provides us with, our life becames unshakeable. This is because the unwavering structure of Romans 8:28 promises us that no matter what comes our way, we can live with confidence and boldness that we can live with true stability and freedom!
No longer can the storms of life blow us away or cause the world around us to break down because we can gladly live knowing that the God who knows all things to always work for our good — even in the midst of the pain and hurt!
How truly powerful is it to know that even when things don’t go the way we expect it to and even when things are attacking us left and right that we can continue living with confidence that out of the pain and the darkness will come something good!

Part Two: What Does it Mean to Be ‘Called’ By God?
There is something a little controversial about the second half of this verse. There are many people who debate over what it truly means to be ‘called’ by the Lord. The idea of predestination and election is a deeply sensitive topic and I don’t believe in teaching about anything that I do not have authority over yet. But one thing I would love to do is to discuss with you various pieces of scripture that could help you to understand what it really means to be ‘called’ by God.
But we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.— 1 Corinthians 1:23-24
Here in 1 Corinthians 1:23-24 it shows that there is a difference between those who hear the Lord’s message and those who have actually been called. Not everyone who hears the gospel have been called. But those who have been called, both Jews and Gentiles will be called from unbelief to faith. No longer will they consider Christ as a stumbling block, but will regard Him as the power of God and the wisdom of God.
And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified. — Romans 8:30
One thing that is so important is to understand that we did not choose the Lord first. It isn’t because we were smarter or better than the unbelievers around us that caused us to choose the Lord. Instead, it is important to give glory to the Lord where it is due. And it is only through His calling that we are given the chance to freely choose Him and go from being faithless to being faithful.
Not only that, but Rebekah’s children were conceived at the same time by our father Isaac. Yet, before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad—in order that God’s purpose in election might stand: not by works but by him who calls—she was told, “The older will serve the younger.” — Romans 9:10-12
What I find so powerful here is the fact that before Esau or Jacob were even born, God already had a plan. And His plan had nothing to do with the works that Esau or Jacob did (after all, they weren’t even born yet!) and it wasn’t because of their ancestors (as they shared the same father and mother!) Instead, His call had all to do with His purpose.
One powerful thing about the concept of predestination and election can be summed up by John Piper of Desiring God. It was written to point out the fact that the reason why we embrace unconditional election is because it is a powerful incentive in our evangelism to help unbelievers, who are great sinners and to cause despair…
When you offer Christ freely to all unbelievers, suppose one says, “I have sinned too terribly. God could never choose to save me.” But when you “believe in the Lord Jesus, you will be saved” (Acts 16:31). Responding to the call of the Lord is how you begin to “confirm your calling and election” (2 Peter 1:10). If you will embrace the Savior, you will confirm that you are elect, and you will be saved. — John Piper
There may never be a clear cut answer to how we can understand the truths behind predestination and free will, because it is impossible to fit the entirety of the logic of God to our own human logic. But, I hope these resources do help you to get one step closer to understanding the concept of what being ‘called’ by God really means!

Bible Study for Young Women: Romans 8:28 Devotion (on His Promises)
filed:
Just your 27 year old dental surgeon, writer and creator of Truthfully, Michelle & Girls After Truth. I love creating printables to help encourage, uplift and propel women to take charge of their faith. I hope you leave this space feeling more joy than when you first came in today Xx
This is one of my favorite verses, like you mentioned in the beginning. I had not thought of it being taught with prosperity gospel. I love it because it gives hold for even the darkest times and calls for only two things. 1) Doing what he called us as you mentioned 2) Loving God. Such s great promise with such simple, yet deeply rooted, stipulations.
I’m going through Genesis right now, and I actually just read about Joseph’s reunion with his brothers a couple of days ago! I think the example of Joseph’s life – being sold into slavery for 20 years before ending up saving the lives of his brothers during the famine – is a wonderful example of God’s sovereignty and goodness. In my own life, I like to think if Psalm 68:8-12 (some of my favorite verses!): no matter what tribulation I go through in this world, God will always bless me with the joy of His presence and the security of His promise that I will one day be with Him.
Loved this post! I found it in a FB group thread 🙂
Hahaha that is awesome! I would love to go through Genesis again soon too! Currently going through Psalms (but not yet up to Psalm 68 yet!). Thanks for sharing your thoughts! x
Michelle great job on dissecting this verse. You are right there is so much to this verse! Suffering from depression and having chronic health issues people have used this against me. But God continues to encourage me with His love daily and I am thankful for the journey He put me on!
Melodie
It is so funny that there is so much in such a short verse aye! But I am so sorry that a verse has been used against you in that way. I hope you have managed to find a community that not only uplifts you and lovingly convicts, but warmly encourages you on your journey 🙂
Beautifully written, Michelle! Thank you for speaking the truth in love. I wholeheartedly agree with you that Romans 8:28 is meant to be an encouragement to us by reminding us that God can use it ALL for good if we are genuinely following Christ. He will use the pain, trials, tests, and joy for our good and His glory if we keep our eyes fixed upon Him. Thank you for sharing!
I’ve seen people who attend churches where prosperity gospel is preached get hurt and disillusioned by those who would use this verse from that prospective. You are so right! We really need to dig in and understand the Word of the Lord here for his verse. For Christians, it’s more like a promise that we can rely on God in all things – no matter what.
Michelle, I did a study of Romans over the last few months as well and was blessed by the wisdom held in this book of the Bible. Romans 8:28 is often misunderstood and you did a very good job breaking it down and explaining it.
The days of apologetics – debating predestination, election, foreordination, and all that. I had long abandoned such ventures. Romans 8:28 definitely is quite a sticking point for many people to fully comprehend.
What I take away from Romans 8:28 is exactly how you have spoken to the context. It is not about God making an easier life. As I read this, I am reminded of the passage in the Gospels where Christ lists out all of the terrible things the disciples (and we have, are, and will) face in this life. At the end of it, he says “Be of good cheer.” I’ve wrestled with this understanding until a few years ago.
Paul – essentially – is saying the same thing. Christ has already overcome the world. A true and right relationship with Him, we have the power and ability to overcome. Not that he is going to wave his hand and make the paths easy for us. No, he is going to provide the comfort and strength we need to face those times of adversity. We endure because he strengthens us to endure. That is my take away from this passage.
Really liked what you said about how He is going to provide the comfort and strength we need to face those times of adversity. I think that this is super true! We do endure because He strengthens us to endure. Thanks for sharing your perspective of this passage! It was so good!
I really enjoyed reading your reflections on Romans 8:28, Michelle. Some people think this verse means everything that happens in their lives will be good! But it’s saying that God will use everything, whether good or bad from our perspective, ultimately for His purpose. He knows what’s good for us when we don’t!
I also appreciate your wise commentary on what it means to be “called.” It’s not as complicated as we make it – when we respond to the gospel and put our faith in Christ, it shows that we’ve been called!
By the way, I LOVE your blog design! Also pinned this post and followed you on Instagram 🙂
Hahahaha thank you Sarah! That is really sweet 🙂 I do love graphic and web design. And yes! It is hard to comprehend sometimes, but it is so true that God will use everything (both good and bad) for His ultimately good purpose!
I am in 1 Corinthians right now. It is awesome. I love Romans 8:28. It brings me comfort knowing God didn’t cause any of this BUT He will work all things out for my good … ❤
I started reading the book of Romans last week, not that I haven’t read it before but I needed to remind myself of some things.
Yes, the verse is loaded and I can see why you would have a whole devotional on it.
I so love and appreciate the care you’ve given this verse! It’s such a great chapter from the Bible, but this one verse is so often taken out of context and misquoted.
A while back, the Holy Spirit convicted me of the part of that verse that says “those who love God” because, of course I would say I love God, but He reminded me that if I love Him, I should obey Him. At that time there were some areas of my life I needed to surrender, and He used this verse to show that to me. He can’t work all things for my good if I don’t fully surrender and allow Him to work!
Thanks again! Love your blog too! You’ve done an amazing job designing it, and everything’s so easy to navigate!
