Do you remember the excitement you first felt when you met a friend who you just ‘clicked’ with? The natural glow that you felt on the inside when you could just talk for hours? But perhaps, after a while, you have experienced what it is like to lose that initial excitement and fall into a period where that friendship just kind of drifted away.
I get it.
I really do.
Life gets in the way.
In the ebb and flow of life, there are some seasons when we feel closer to God and some seasons when we feel further away. However, one thing is sure. No matter the season, he remains constant and he never changes. But, how do we grow closer to our Heavenly Father who desires to have us live more closely to Him? Especially for those of us who are walking through those really difficult seasons? After all, when He was asking you to just come to Him as you are, He meant in all seasons. He doesn’t care if you are feeling close to Him in the moment or far away, He just wants you to come. He wants to have you drop everything, run to Him with open arms and be close to Him.
He is the perfect Father who has never let you down and the perfect Father who wants to be close to you.

5 Biblical Ways to Draw Closer to God
How to Get Closer to God #1: Spending Time in Prayer
Prayer is such a God-given gift.
Even for those introverts among us (raise your hand in the air if that’s you!), it is a real blessing that we can communicate to our Heavenly Father on a regular basis. There is something so special about being able to get into a prayer routine because it is through this that we can create a space for an intimate conversation with God. Life can be straight-up hard. So when we can dive deep into prayer to seek guidance and wisdom from God, prayer becomes a way to navigate life’s challenges, make decisions in alignment with God’s principles, and gain insight into His sovereign will.
God doesn’t need to hear our prayers for Him to know what we are feeling inside, so the ultimate point of prayer is to present us with a way to feel closer to Him. And the wonderful thing is that prayer is so powerful that it isn’t just something that is limited to when we are going through a hard time. In Philippians 4:6-7 Paul encourages believers to present their requests to God with thanksgiving and promises that the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard their hearts and minds. Prayer is also for those moments when we raise our voices in joyous sound. We can be like King David who in all seasons, both the highs and the lows, rejoiced in the Heavenly Father who loved him.
Hallelujah.
And if you are ever at a loss for words (I am looking at you fellow introverts out there!) you are not without hope! The Bible is filled with people who prayed. In fact, there is a whole book in the Bible dedicated to prayer. Check out the book of Psalms which is filled with prayers that range from expressions of joy to cries for help. I love so many Psalms, but my personal favourite is Psalm 23. Be sure to check it out!
Sometimes getting into a prayer routine can be hard. Work gets in the way. School gets in the way. Kids get in the way. LIFE gets in the way. That is exactly why sometimes staying practical and creating new systems to keep you on track can help with a well-disciplined prayer life. This is where the Daily Prayer Journal printable comes in handy. Deepen your relationship with God through regular prayer by making use of the practical accountability of a prayer journal.

How to Get Closer to God #2: Reading Scripture
Do you remember how it felt to be let down by a promise?
Perhaps it was a trip that you were suuuuuper excited for, but it ended up getting cancelled. Or maybe your mum or dad promised you that you could have that last piece of candy, but they forgot and gave it to your brother instead.
When we feel lost, alone or afraid, the Bible can serve as one of the ways God chooses to offer spiritual nourishment and insights into His character. Being reminded of who our Father is, provides comfort because we can then trust in His promises. When we know that our Heavenly Father is never-changing, constant and faithful, we can believe that His promises mean something. We can take comfort that through His Son there is hope.
There is no comfort from God if we can not believe that He is who He says He is and that He will do what He says He will do.
So, if you want to draw closer to God and deepen your relationship with God, set aside dedicated time for reading and meditating on scripture. Reflect on the teachings of Jesus in the Gospels, explore the wisdom literature in Proverbs and Ecclesiastes, and immerse yourself in the transformative messages found throughout the Old and New Testaments. By growing closer to God, you will be able to have a faith that is strongand can anchor itself through any storm.
How amazing is that??

The Bible emphasizes the importance of fellowship and community in nurturing one’s faith. In Hebrews 10:24-25, believers are urged not to forsake gathering together but to encourage one another. Engaging in a Christian community provides support, accountability, and the opportunity to share in the journey of faith.
So attend church services, join a small group, or participate in community outreach initiatives. It doesn’t have to be a formal affair, it can be something as simple as just extending a helping hand out to those in need. These communal experiences not only strengthen your relationship with God but also allow you to witness His work in the lives of others, fostering a sense of shared spiritual journey.
Jesus’ teachings consistently emphasized the importance of serving others with love and compassion. Engaging in acts of kindness and service is a tangible expression of Christian love and a means to draw closer to God. Acts of service reflect the selfless love exemplified by Christ and deepen your understanding of God’s call to love and serve others.
How beautiful is that?
How to Get Closer to God #4: Cultivating Gratitude
Gratitude can help open our hearts and draw us closer to God. Expressing gratitude for the blessings in one’s life, both big and small, is a way of acknowledging the presence of God’s grace. Gratitude shifts the focus from what may be lacking to the abundance that surrounds us, fostering a sense of contentment and connection to our Heavenly Creator.
Keeping a gratitude journal, where we can regularly write down things we are thankful for, is a practical way to cultivate a grateful heart. This practice encourages mindfulness of the positive aspects of life and reinforces the understanding that every moment is an opportunity to experience God’s love and presence. After all, Psalm 100:4 encourages us to enter God’s presence with thanksgiving and praise. Developing a heart of gratitude shifts the focus from personal desires to acknowledging the blessings bestowed by God.
Take time each day to count your blessings, both big and small. Expressing gratitude in prayer and acknowledging God’s faithfulness in various aspects of your life fosters a deeper sense of connection and appreciation for His providence.

How to Get Closer to God #5: Trusting God in All Circumstances
Trusting God wholeheartedly, even in the face of uncertainty, is a testament to faith and deepens one’s relationship with Him. Proverbs 3:5-6 advises believers to trust in the Lord with all their hearts and lean not on their own understanding. Surrendering control and placing trust in God’s providence is an act of faith that fosters a closer relationship.
When faced with challenges, consciously choose to surrender your worries to God in prayer. Trusting in His wisdom and plan, even when it may not align with your own, is a transformative expression of faith that draws you closer to the heart of God. The ability to maintain faith and trust in God’s plan, even when circumstances seem overwhelming, strengthens the foundation of your relationship with God.
Trials and tribulations are an inevitable part of life, but the Bible encourages believers to remain steadfast in faith during challenging times. James 1:2-4 teaches that trials produce perseverance and maturity in faith. Trusting God’s sovereignty and relying on His strength in the midst of trials deepens the resilience of your relationship with Him.
Conclusion
Ultimately, the journey towards God is a journey that requires sincerity, dedication, and an open heart. Becoming closer to God is a dynamic and transformative journey rooted in biblical principles. Through prayer, scripture, gratitude, fellowship, confession, trust, service, and steadfast faith during trials, believers can deepen their connection with the Almighty. As you embark on this spiritual journey, may you be guided by the timeless wisdom of the Bible, drawing ever nearer to the source of eternal love and grace.
