I’ve been told that I’m always smiling but within the same day, I’ve been told that I don’t smile enough. I have been told that I am sweet, but within the next hour, I’ve been told that I’m unapproachable. I’ve been told that I have a good sense of wit, but just a few minutes later, I have been told that I’m too serious. But being a daughter of God is the one identity that never changes. Honestly!
We get told on a daily basis about we who are. And there never seems to be a set opinion about anything.
One minute people are singing our praises and within moments, these exact same people can’t wait to tear us down. So what does it mean to find your identity in being a daughter of God? And why does our status of being a daughter of God really matter?
Why Does it Matter If You’re a Daughter of God?
It matters because it is the only unshakeable identity that you can have. It is your identity in Christand your Maker that gives you an unmovable foundation beneath your feet. There is nothing else that can ever promise such reliability and strength in your life. Everything else changes with the wind because of how fickle the world and the people in it are. But, the Creator of the heavens and the earth never changes. He is who He says He is. And you are who He says you are.
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. — Hebrews 13:8
It matters because it by your identity as a daughter of God that marks your invitation into heaven. Because when you receive Him by grace through faith, you are given your birthright of becoming a child of God. So, what identity could matter more than the one that promises to deliver you from the brokenness of this world?
Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God — John 1:12

What Does it REALLY Mean to Be a Daughter of God?
#1 You Once Were Lost
Fact is, we are all like lost puppies.
We rush around the world trying to look for our master and we desperately seek safety. However, what we don’t know is that our Creator is literally right there in front of us pathing the way back towards Him. He couldn’t be more obvious than if He an aircraft marshaller waving those orange batons right in front of you.
The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. — Deuteronomy 31:8
So, if you’re feeling alone… girl, you don’t have to be!
He didn’t want to save you from your ‘lostness’ because you were perfect or because you had a glowing list of accomplishments. He wants to extend that gift of grace simply because of how much He loves you. So take comfort in the fact that your Creator has found you and He has already paid the price you were supposed to pay.
From the moment we were tiny tots, we were told of who we are, or who we should be. With so many opinions flying left and right, it becomes almost impossible for us to truly find a steadfast sense of self. We begin wondering who we really are when all these opinions only seem to contradict one another.
After all, how can we be both loving and aloof? How can we be both smart and stupid at the same time? And how can we be considered both pretty and ugly?
But when we receive our identity as a daughter of Christ, we put aside our worldly identity and acceptour newfound identity in Christ. So when we become a daughter of God, our identity becomes tied steadfastly to the One who knows all things and created all things. Our identity becomes separate to that of the world.
If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. — John 15:19
#3 You are No Longer Separated From Your Creator
For the longest time we were separated from God because of our sin. Because of our sin, our darkness and our ugliness, we could not set foot into His presence. But because the Lord our God loved His creations so much, He gave us Jesus. He suffered death on the cross and died for our sins so that He could destroy the barrier that separated us from Him. It is through Him and His death that we are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of His household. (Ephesians 2:11-19)
Remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ. — Ephesians 2:12-13
So, by accepting your identity as a daughter of God, you will no longer be homeless or without belonging… for you are no longer separated from the One who created you and calls you by name.

#4 You Belong to the Kingdom of God
The world is broken.
The moment sin entered the world, pain, grief, sadness, anger, hatred, guilt and shame entered alongside it.
But this was not the world that God had originally designed.
Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.” — John 18:36
So girl, I know that life is hard sometimes. And sometimes even a tub of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream won’t do the trick. But there is a promise. There is a promise of a better future. And with the death of Christ on the cross, this future has already been fulfilled. All you need to do is fall at the feet of the cross and with all that you have, ask for His mercy and receive His invitation of grace.
#5 You Have Responsibilities to Him
But it doesn’t just end at the invitation. When you become a daughter of God, you have a responsibility to continue seeking after God and allow the indwelling of the Holy Spirit to morph you and guide you so that you can grow up to be a good tree that bears good fruit.
By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them. — Matthew 7:16-20
When you become a daughter of God, you have the responsibilities to listen to the Word of Godand obey the directions of Holy Spirit to lead a set-apart life that glorifies the One who created you and calls you by name. Being a daughter of God is not an identity to be taken lightly, but one that requires your whole heart.
✋ I’m a Daughter of God… Now What Do I Do?
It’s not just enough to proclaim that you are a daughter of God. After all, being a daughter of God is not an identity that you can keep simply by going through all the ‘right’ motions.
You don’t just simply sign up to go to church services once a week, feel good about doing ‘good’ deeds, praying before your meals and then simply living life as if nothing else has changed. When you become a daughter of God, you are saying no to lukewarm faith and saying yes to walking with God in step with biblical truths. When you become a daughter of God, with all that you are, you are seeking a real, genuine, relationship with your Father.
So many people resist becoming a daughter of God because they feel as if they don’t really deserve it. The fact is, they don’t. But we don’t become daughters of God by bringing Him a list of glowing accomplishments or achieving a certain level of perfection. Rather, it is a free gift that flows out of His mercy and grace when we simply have true faith.
If you want to be a daughter of God and truly step into this role, stop what you are doing right now and drop on your knees. Pray to Him and ask Him to help you and guide you in this new role that you’ve accepted. Acknowledge that this role is not one that you will succeed in if you do it by yourself and humbly admit that it is a role that requires His strength and guidance.

Disclaimer: The Hard Truth About Being a Daughter of God
God never promised that being His daughter will mean that life will be easy and breezy for you. In fact, accepting your role as a daughter of God is probably going to bring more challenges than a life rejecting this royal position.
This is because when we accept this position as a daughter of God, we will no longer belong to the world, but to the Kingdom of Heaven. And these two nations are feuding. They can’t be more different to each other. So naturally, when you decide to take this stand as God’s daughter, you will face challenges and opposition. However, we can rest assured that despite all the hardships, we have a promise waiting for us.
Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. — James 1:12
And even in this life, when we accept our position as a daughter of God, there is a purpose to our sufferings. For we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28) So no matter what happens, we can smile knowing that even the hard moments ALWAYS has a good, good purpose! 💛
Before you go, have you heard of the Dwell Bible app?
Dwell helps to engage its listeners by dramatizing the Word of God and adding unique, ambient music. This Bible app also allows it’s listeners to choose between a range of different unique voices (including both male and female voices). However, the thing about this Bible app is that it is not free.
If you don’t know if the style of Dwell is for you (because the dramatization of His Word just might not be your style), then you can definitely just opt for a free 7-day trial to see if you like it before committing to the $39.99 annual payment (which to be honest, is nowhere as bad as a Netflix or Spotify subscription).
